Sex education guide
This work was conducted independently by some of the GeneEQUAL team members and is not part of the GeneEQUAL research projects.
Sex education for students with intellectual disability and on the autism spectrum: A practical methodology guide is a comprehensive resource designed to support effective sex education delivery.
The guide was led by GeneEQUAL team member Professor Iva Strnadová and co-authored by an international team including Sarah Hayes (also a GeneEQUAL team member, Australia) and colleagues from Czech Republic (Bernoldová, J., Eisner, P., Šimáčková, H.), Serbia (Đorđević, M., Sretenović, I., Nedović, G., Potić S.), and Slovak Republic (Revická, M., Ondrejková, M., Jurčová Z.).
The guide incorporates evidence-based practices specifically developed for students with intellectual disability and on the autism spectrum. It features ready-to-use lesson plans covering essential topics from relationships and consent to sexual health and personal safety. All materials include Easy Read resources to ensure accessibility and understanding for students with diverse learning needs. This guide links to UNESCO’s International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education (ITGSE) and aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
While primarily designed for teachers, this methodology guide is also valuable for parents, community workers, and healthcare professionals who support young people with disability in learning about relationships and sexuality.
This guide was developed with funding from the European Union (Erasmus+ KA210-VET – Small-scale partnerships in vocational education and training) and is available in four languages: English, Czech, Serbian, and Slovak.
